Superstructures at low spin - high spin transitions

چکیده

In many transition metal compounds, in particular those containing Fe and Co, there occur spin-state transitions between low-spin and high-spin (or intermediate-spin) states. We show that typical interactions between similar spin-state ions are short-range repulsion, and long-range interaction which can have a different sign depending on the elastic anisotropy of the lattice and on the direction between respective ions. Due to such character of effective interactions there may occur at spin-state transitions different superstructures — ordered arrangement of different spin-states, which in particular may have the form of stripes. The properties of the system TlSr2CoO5 for which such a superstructure was recently observed experimentally, are discussed from this point of view. Typeset using REVTEX

Magnetic Properties and Phase Transitions in a Spin-1 Random Transverse Ising Model on Simple Cubic Lattice

Within the effective-field theory with correlations (EFT), a transverse random field spin-1 Ising model on the simple cubic (z=6) lattice is studied. The phase diagrams, the behavior of critical points, transverse magnetization,  internal energy, magnetic specific heat are obtained numerically and discussed for different values of p the concentration of the random transverse field.

Magnetic phase diagrams of the generalized spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model

A combination of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations and a well-controlled approximative method is used to examine the ground-state phase diagrams of the spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model extended by the spin-dependent on-site interaction (J) between localized spins and itinerant (d) electrons, as well as by external magnetic field (h). Both the magnetic ordering and metamagnetic...

The origin of cooperativity in high-spin-low-spin transitions in molecular crystals

A new model for the first-order transitions between the low-spin and high-spin phases of molecular crystals of some transition metal complexes is proposed. Tbe abrupt spin transitions (or those exhibiting thermal hysteresis) are attributed to first-order transitions between the different crystal phases with the sublattice order. The necessary conditions for these transitions to take place are f...

MAGNETISATION AND ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE STUDIES OF TETRAHEDRAL AMORPHOUS CARBON

The magnetisation and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of two specimens of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), deposited from a filtered cathodic arc, were measured over a wide temperature range. The magnetisation was found to consist of superparamagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions. The superparamagnetic contribution resembled that recently found in carbon prepared from ...

Incompatibility of modulated checkerboard patterns with the neutron scattering resonance peak in cuprate superconductors

Checkerboard patterns have been proposed to explain the real space structure observed in scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on BSCCO and Na-CCOC. However, simple checkerboard patterns have low energy incommsensurate IC spin peaks rotated 45° from the direction of the charge IC peaks, contrary to what is seen in neutron scattering. Here, we study modulated checkerboard patterns which can ...
